Watering Adjustments for Spring and Summer

As we move into spring and summer here on the Treasure Coast, adjusting your lawn’s watering schedule is essential for keeping it healthy and thriving. Many homeowners stick to the same watering routine year-round, but Florida’s climate doesn’t work that way. Our lawns need different amounts of water depending on the season, and the type of soil you have plays a huge role in how often and how long you should water.

Why Adjust Watering in Spring & Summer?

During the cooler months, lawns don’t need as much water because the sun isn’t as intense, and the grass isn’t growing as quickly. But as temperatures rise in spring and summer, evaporation happens faster, and your lawn’s roots pull more water from the soil to stay green and healthy. If you don’t adjust your watering schedule, you might end up with dry, stressed grass or, on the flip side, a soggy lawn that’s more prone to disease.

Soil Type Matters

Not all lawns are the same, and the type of soil under your grass determines how well it holds water. Here in the Treasure Coast, we mostly see two main soil types:

  1. Sandy Soil – Drains quickly and doesn’t hold much moisture. Lawns with sandy soil may need shorter, more frequent watering sessions to keep moisture levels balanced.

  2. Loamy or Muck Soil – Holds water longer but can get compacted. These lawns need less frequent watering, but when you do water, it should be deep enough to encourage strong root growth.

How to Water the Right Way

  • Early morning is best – Watering between 4 AM and 9 AM allows water to soak into the soil before the sun gets too strong. Watering in the afternoon leads to evaporation, and watering at night can cause disease.

  • Water deeply, not daily – Instead of watering a little every day, aim for about ½ to ¾ inch of water per session, 2-3 times per week. This encourages deeper roots, making your lawn more drought-resistant.

  • Watch for signs – If your grass starts to look bluish-gray or footprints stay visible after you walk on it, it’s time to water.

A well-watered lawn is the foundation of a healthy, green yard, but overwatering or underwatering can cause more harm than good. By adjusting your watering schedule based on the season and your soil type, you’ll set your lawn up for success.
